On the 1st-2nd of April, 2008 the embassy of Sweden in Ukraine, the UN Program of Equal Opportunities, department of Sociology of National university "Kyiv-Mohyla Academy", Department of International Cooperation of Scientific Organization and Swedish Institute organized Swedish-Ukrainian international seminar "Conscientious parenthood: new challenges and solutions".
The participants: Mr. Jon-Krister Olander - Ambassador of Sweden in Ukraine, Francis M. O'Donnel - UN system coordinator, Sesiliya Raymers- project coordinator "Equality in Sweden", Swedish Institute, Dennis Kulman - Office of Ombudsman on Equal Opportunities, researcher Olena Bondarenko, MP, Timoshenko Party, head of the subcommittee on gender policy, Rayisa-Sorochynska Kyrylenko - Member of Parliament, Lars Plantin - parenthood researcher, Doctor of Science in Social work (Malmo University), Oleksiy Khmara (Kirovohrad) - project "Dad school - on the way to responsible parenthood", Larysa Kobelyanska - Head of the program of equal opportunities, Ella Libanova - Director of the Institute of Demography and Social research of the Academy of Science of Ukraine, Tamara Martsenuk - guest researcher of Heterborg University (Sweden), Lidiya Amdzhadin - scientific worker of the Institute of Sociology of the National academy and other officials, scientists, and experts, which held speeches. Journalists from different Ukrainian publishing houses, experts, teachers, and students were also present at the event.
The participants of the seminar underlined the responsible parenthood as one of the most important ways of achieving gender equality in families and at work. As the result of the seminar, it was stressed that an important task in Ukraine now is the spreading of gender-specific knowledge and skills among men. It is important to achieve the stage, when there is a sufficient amount of men in Ukraine who completely understand gender problems and feel their responsibility as the parents. Such a critical mass is capable of becoming the nucleus of positive changes.
