Project "Streets for People Trash Cans for Trash"

The project objective: to prevent the spread of contaminagious sicknesses that are the most dangerous in the trash accumilating places by the means of installing additional trashbins in «Aviation Town» district of Kirovohrad

Duration: December, 2005-February 2006

Situation Analysis:

«Aviation Town» district has always been considered one of the most beautiful ones in town. But as one of the multi stored building district it has issues of its own. One of them is trash pick -up. It goes without saying that the district lacks trashbins and trash cans.

There are several reasons for this: the increasing number of selling places, people's iresponsible attitude and a huge number of plastic bottles that fill up the majority of trashbins. In addition, almost all trash containers date back to the Soviet times (15—20years ago) and as a result they don't function properly anymore. Moreover, to buy new trashcans is a very expensive thing to do for local utility service center .

In August, 2005 we conducted the survey that showed 80% of district population considers trash pick up to be an urgent issue. In addition, the trash scattered all around the trash bins is the direct threat to people health especially to kids who play in the neighbouring playgrounds. Taking into account all above mentioned we consider that there exists the problem of contamination of the district inhabitants due to irregular trash pick up and the inapropriate working condition of the old containers.

Outcomes:

During the project period there were new trash bins made which are bigger in size and made of harder materials. It assisted in preventing the trash spread all over the neaby places in the trash sections. In addition, the Asossiation held information campaign aimed at forming responsible attitude towards ecological situation in the district. Everybody wants to live in a clean welcoming house, street, town and country. Streets are for people, trashbins are for trash!
